Cultivating our Ecosystem

A national rugby system is an ecosystem of interconnected layers for fans to engage in and players to develop through.

In recent years there’s been a significant amount of attention and subsequent discussion directed towards the top tiers in Australia’s rugby ecosystem and rightly so. As the ‘face’ and mass engagement point of the game, it has not served us well. There is no escaping the fact that this cog that is vital for not just the growth but survival of the game is underperforming drastically and change is a must.

To maximise effectiveness though, that change needs to be coordinated and demonstrate alignment between the numerous platforms that make up a national rugby ecosystem. Therefore, the change needs to start at the top and reach right down to be felt at the grassroots of the game where all of us will start and most of us will end our playing careers.

This website provides details for a proposed way forward for Australian Rugby across the important areas that make up our rugby ecosystem. I invite you to navigate through the five different layers that are identified which will detail the new strategies and structural changes that I believe are required to achieve improved outcomes within each of these spaces. The final section can be found on the 'overview' page which demonstrates how these layers fit together while establishing alignment between each to ensure they are working together effectively to produce positive results for the game.

I also want to mention that there’s a very important part of Australian rugby’s ecosystem that isn’t explicitly unpacked which is the women’s game. The reason for that is that I think the same structures that are being proposed across these layers could effectively apply for the women’s game as well. It’s just a matter of women’s rugby growing into those structures which I have no doubt it will do over time.

Thank you for stopping by for a look and please be sure to reach out below to provide thoughts and feedback on any of the strategies or the concept as a whole. We the fans are the most important stakeholder of the game and it’s vital (now more than ever) that those of us at the coalface have a voice to provide administrations with a valuable point of consultation while adding to the calls to get stakeholders working together to produce strategy that has the games growth, sustainability and success at heart!
